Uganda: Disabled by stereotype study

Disabled by stereotype? In this video from The Choice Lab, researcher Kjetil Bjorvatn discusses results from a recent study in urban and rural Uganda. The study was conducted together with The Choice Lab researcher Bertil Tungodden and is part of the project “We can manage!”, carried out in collaboration with The Norwegian Association of Disabled (Norges Handikapforbund) and headed by the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU). Bjorvatn and Tungodden present experimental evidence on the effect of social identity on disabled secondary school students. In the rural setting, they find a negative effect of social identity on confidence, but, somewhat surprisingly, in the urban setting they find a positive effect on confidence. The findings suggest that social identities are shaped by the local environment and are not necessarily in line with commonly held stereotypes, which could have important implications for the design of policies aimed at improving the lives of the disabled. The results are reported in their paper “Disabled by stereotype?
